My Toyota Prado is the year 97 version, also known as the Prado 90 series and I nicknamed it Big Boy.
The decision to make a second purchase of a vehicle was due to the requirement of both me and my wife working at two different places and without a second vehicle, it would be very time consuming commuting to our work places. Toyota has came out with great 4x4 throughout its history and because of Prado's known reliability and nice look, I have made the decision to purchase in 2009 from a second hand car dealer.
Previously, this was a company car used mainly by the company director's wife for occasional driving so the mileage was pretty low at about 120,000km at the time of purchase. There was no major repair required except for the worn rear absorbers and clutch sets.
My Prado was not from Japan but was locally assembled in Malaysia by Toyota UMW back in the 90s'. Two types of engines used for the Malaysian assembled Prado were the 2.8litre non-turbo charged diesel engine with engine code "3L" and a 2.7litre non-turbo charged petrol engine with engine code "3RZ-FE". Mine is the later. Compared to the Japanese version, the Malaysian assembled version looks quite "bare" without the roof railing, spoiler, rear spare tyre cover and alloy rims.
Counting from year 1997 up to now, the car is almost 17 years old with parts starting to fail. Since purchase, I have done several repair/replacement to this car listed below:
1. Replacement of Toyota Genuine Clutch kits.
2. Replacement of steering rack (the most expensive costing about RM2,000)
3. Replacement off all four original absorbers to Kayaba absorbers.
4. Replacement of rear coil springs to King springs.
5. Replacement of Power Steering and Clutch pumps.
There goes, a brief background about my Big Boy. Recently, I suspect the ball joint and clutch pumps(again!!) are failing and I will update you regarding the repair carried out.
Mine looks similar to this without the alloy rims
